A New Normal
The excitement as his name is called up next. Nervous energy fills his body as he walks to home plate. One practice swing, just because he saw his favorite player, Ziel Karrara, do it in a game. The feeling of his bat, heavy in his hands. He sets his feet shoulder width apart and looks up towards the pitcher’s mound. One runner on base, his best friend Tryn. He looks up and gets ready to hit the ball that is coming towards him. Swinging the bat forcefully, he makes contact with the ball and the ball goes flying into the air. “HOME RUN” screams the announcer, and he runs around the bases as the rest of his teammates come out to congratulate him. The team has won the game because of his two-run home run.
This is Zarden’s favorite memory of his baseball career thus far. He was one of the best players on his team, the Kiren Sluggers. He liked being the player on the team that his teammates could count on to produce a game winning run when they needed it most. When it was all said and done, he is scared that he will never have this feeling again. Kiren, Mars: a quiet, little city on the outskirts of the biggest city on the planet of Mars. It is home to one school system, lots of families with big opinions and home to twelve-year-old Zarden Lote and his family.
“Zarden, I think it would be a good idea for you to get out and play again,” Zarden’s mom said.
“What’s the point, Mom? I have one arm, and I’m not even going to be able to hold the bat let alone hit the ball. The stupid fake arm that I have won’t let me do anything,” Zarden said.
“Honey, you haven’t even tried to play baseball since the accident. I know that it won’t be the same for you, but you can at least try right? Baseball makes you so happy, and it makes me so sad to see you so sad.”
“Mom, I can’t play anymore. People will make fun of me, because I only have one arm. I can’t, I just can’t do it.”
“Honey, can you just try to hold the bat? Maybe just try now? No one knows about the accident or about what happened. Maybe try it here, at home.”
Zarden gives his mom a look of disapproval, but he knows it would make her happy. He wanted to try it too because he knows that if he can hold the bat, maybe, just maybe he could play again.
“Ok, I’m going to try. But I want to do this by myself. I don’t want you to come out here and watch me.” Zarden explains to his mom.
As Zarden walks outside, he looks back to see his mom smiling to herself. He knows that she just wants him to be happy.
“Ok, I can do this. All I have to do is put both hands on the bat, pick it up, and hold it in the air as if I were going to swing.” Zarden says to himself. “I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.”
He picks up the bat and holds it up in the air as if he were to swing. Smiling from ear to ear, he brings the bat around in a swinging motion. No pain, but no strength, as he thinks to himself, “I can swing the bat, but I don’t think I could hit the ball.”
Pleased enough, he throws the bat onto the ground and runs inside to tell his parents. His mom, obviously ecstatic, throws her arms around her son and hugs him tightly. His dad, who had just gotten home from work, also gives his son a big hug.
A few weeks have gone by and Zarden is outside playing baseball every single day so he can regain his strength. He enlists the help from his dad and his best friend Tryn. They work every day for a month to get Zarden back into baseball shape.
Now was the time for Zarden to go back to the field. He ached for that feeling of swinging the bat with all of his might and hitting the ball out of the park. He missed hanging out with his friends in the dugout. He missed hearing the crowd cheering and yelling. It’s time, and he knows it.
“Hey, maybe you’ll be able to pick right back up where you left off? I think Coach will let you play right away because you were the best player out there.” Tryn said as they walked to the baseball diamond.
“I’ll be like Ziel Karrara when he was on the injured list and came back and hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Martians team. Man, that game was insane!” exclaimed Zarden.
“I think you’re the only one who remembers that, dude. I don’t know how you can remember all of these old baseball plays” says Tryn.
“Baseball is just the best. I love to watch all of the games and watch the best of the best play. It is so cool!” explains Zarden.
They finally make it to the dugout where the rest of the team is waiting to get started. Zarden came prepared: wearing his prosthetic and a long sleeve shirt to hide it. He didn’t want to give anyone a reason to make fun of him. He just wanted to play baseball again. When he walked past his teammates, he got a bunch of confused and judgmental looks. The looks on people’s faces looked like they had just seen a one-legged kangaroo on a unicycle.
“What are you doing here? My mom said you were in an accident and you lost an arm?” said one of his teammates.
“He came to play baseball, same as you guys.” Tryn fires back.
“Won’t you just bring the team down? Can you even hold the bat or swing it or even play second base anymore? I’m sure you can’t so you should just go home” says the bully teammate.
“I can do everything I used to be able to do. I can do this” Zarden says optimistically.
“Yeah ok I guess we’ll see. If you mess this up for us, I’ll have my mom get you kicked off the team for good” the boy challenges.
The boy walked away thinking he was all that and a bag of chips. As the team went through their general pre-game warm up, all Zarden could think about was if he truly did belong here. Would he just bring the team down? What if he couldn’t hit the ball or even catch the ball when playing defense? What would people think then? Becoming preoccupied with all of these thoughts racing through his head, Zarden wasn’t paying attention and accidently smashed into his teammate who was running in the opposite direction as him. Zarden fell hard to the ground. When he caught himself though, his prosthetic arm fell off and his arm was now bare. Everyone could see the scar where the doctors had to stich up the skin that remained. Everyone could see the nub where the arm was supposed to be but was no longer there.
“More of a reason to not play right, Zarden?” said the teammate who gave him a hard time from before. “You can’t even complete the warm up. What makes you think you can play in the game?”
The boy, again acting like a jock who had just taken someone’s lunch money, held his head high as if he were better than everyone else, and walked towards the bench. Some of the other boys showed sympathetic looks as they wanted to say something but didn’t want to defy their bully teammate. One of the sympathetic teammates, however, showed his support by helping Zarden get up from the ground. The game was about to start and Zarden was riding the bench.
Embarrassed and sad, Zarden watched the game from the comfort of the dugout. “Maybe I won’t play today, but I can be the best teammate out here” Zarden said to himself. He cheered everyone on, high-fived the teammates with good plays, and gave advice to the teammates who didn’t.
“Zarden, you’re up! Let’s see what you can do” Coach says. It was the middle of the fourth inning, and he was pinch hitting for the right-fielder. Zarden couldn’t believe that he was getting the chance to play.
Jumping up from the bench, Zarden walks over to the bat rack, picks up his bat and walks over to his coach.
“Just have fun buddy” says coach.
“Thanks coach” Zarden exclaims.
Now he could hear his name being called by the announcer followed by cheers from the crowd. As Zarden walks up to home plate, he can feel the adrenaline rushing through his body. He wraps both hands around the base of the bat, feeling the weight of it in his hands. He picks it up like it is as light as a feather though. He takes a practice swing, just like Ziel Karrara does it. Then, he steps up to the plate, plants his feet, and waits for the pitcher to throw the ball towards him. He can feel the breeze blow his jersey, but it feels good. The pitcher gets ready to throw the ball. He winds up his arm, and then, before he knew it, the ball was speeding towards Zarden like a car speeds to run the yellow light before it turns red. Zarden times it perfectly. He begins his swing, rotates his hips to get as much power as he can, and makes contact with the ball. He hit the ball as hard as he could. He felt the ball leap off his bat, and he dropped the bat and began to run towards first base.
The breeze rushing through his jersey, whipping against his face as we raced towards the base. He passes the first baseman and the umpire, who is motioning that he is safe.
With a smile stretching from ear to ear, Zarden finally felt the best feeling in the world yet again. He could hear the cheers from all around: the crowd and his teammates. This is what he had missed, and he finally had the chance to do it again.

The Accident
“Zarden! Grab your swimming trunks, a towel, and a swimming mask for when we go to the beach.” Mrs. Lote, Zarden’s mom says.
“Yay! I can’t wait to go to the ocean for the first time! What is it called again?” asks Zarden.
“It’s called the Ocean of Zeda. It’s the only ocean on the planet of Mars. Isn’t that so cool?” explains Mrs. Lote.
“That’s so cool Mom!” exclaims Zarden.
“You just have to be careful of two things. First, the rip current can be dangerous. It can pull you out to the middle of the ocean and it can kill you. Second, watch out for the vredlands. They are monsters that live in the ocean that really dislike aliens and they are ugly, vicious, and kind of small. They are not big creatures, but they sure do have big consequences. Vredlands have poison in their teeth. When they bite you, the bite isn’t what hurts you, it’s the poison in the teeth” explains Mrs. Lote with extreme caution.
“Oh, mom they sound so scary. What do they look like? Will I see one today?” asks Zarden.
“It’s not likely. They don’t come around to this beach very often. It’s the open water that you have to be careful with. They are completely green, the darkest green you can think of. The monsters have really big eyes, like the size of a bowling ball and they have two legs, one near its head and the other near its bottom. The crazy thing is that vredlands cannot walk because their legs are on the underbelly side so they can only swim in the ocean. The weirdest thing about a vredland is they smile before they bite you. That’s why they’re so dangerous because you think they’re going to be nice and then they are not nice” says Mrs. Lote.
It’s the middle of the summer in Kiren on the planet Mars. It is also Zarden Lote’s eleventh birthday. All he asked for this year was to go to the beach. Zarden’s birthday happened to be in the middle of the week. In order to celebrate, his mom took the day off of work and took him to the beach: Lorde Beach on the Ocean of Zeda. The beach is three hours away from Kiren so instead of walking, Zarden and his mom take the family spaceship. As they levitate into the ship parking lot, Zarden sees the ocean for the very first time.
“Wow the ocean is even more beautiful than I ever imagined it would be. The water is a neon pink color and the sand is yellow. There are people playing games and swimming in the water. This is so awesome!” Zarden says. “There is even food and ice cream here! No way! Mom! They have my favorite, fried whompers and ice cream! Can I get some? Please, please oh please?” Zarden excitedly asks.
“What is a fried whomper?” asks Mrs. Lote.
“It’s a chocolate covered crème cookie, the crème, a marshmallow, and a piece of chocolate, all dipped in white chocolate, and then fried in dough batter. It’s so good mom!”
“Well it is your birthday, of course you can have some of it!” says Mrs. Lote, “but let’s go swimming first, what do you think?”
“Yes okay! That sounds like lots of fun to me!”
Trying but failing to contain all of his excitement, Zarden drops everything he is carrying, puts his goggles on, and runs into the ocean. The water feels like a bath, not too hot, not too cold. The sun is blaring down, so the water feels really nice right now. There is a slight breeze so there are some little waves but nothing crazy big, nothing that scares Zarden. He puts his head into the water and looks down at the bottom of the ocean.
“Wow! I just saw a fish” says Zarden excitedly to himself when he comes up for air. He puts his head down again and tries to follow the fish.
Kicking and swimming and coming up for air every once in a while, Zarden still follows the fish. He notices that there are other fish in the ocean too. It’s like a party for the fish, there are all types of them, and they are all hanging out in the very same spot. Zarden dives down and tries to get a better look. The fish seem curious of him too. They start swimming around him, swimming so close to him that he could touch one. When they get close enough, maybe an arm’s length away, he tries to pet it and it swims away. As he swims back up to the surface of the water, gasping for air, he realizes where he is in proximity to the beach. He is out way farther than he thought. All of the other aliens look like tiny dots, and he can’t even see his mom anymore. Hmm maybe I should swim back in nowZarden thinks to himself. One more look at the fish and then I’ll swim back.
He pokes his head under one more time and sees nothing but a sandy bottom six feet under him. He looks around, to his left and then the right and still he doesn’t see anything.
“That’s weird” Zarden says confusedly.
He turns around to swim back to the beach, takes a deep breath, and puts his head in the water, and sees a dark green color. Continuing to swim as though he didn’t see it, he sees the flash of dark green again.
“Ok, maybe it’s just a fish. I’m going to keep swimming, maybe swim a little faster than I was and get back to mom.” He looks up to find his mom on the beach, he’s getting a little closer; the people don’t look like dots another, just tiny aliens instead of full size.
One more deep breath in and the head goes into the water again. As soon as he ducks his head under, there is a creature directly in front of him. The creature has two legs on the underbelly and its eyes are as big as bowling balls. The creature looks at Zarden and swims closer. Panicking, Zarden starts to breath in water. His heart rate increases, and he starts to cough. He picks his head up out of the water and gasps for air. He can no longer see the creature anymore though. He sticks his head back under and frantically looks around for the vredland. Zarden spins in circles a few times looking for the newly identified monster.
“Hm I can’t see it anymore so maybe it went away, and it’ll bother someone else.”
Zarden thinks as he starts swimming towards shore again. As soon as he puts his head back down in the water, the vredland is right in front of him. Trying not to panic again, Zarden tries to swim around the monster and the monster moves to block him. He sees the monster smile and then feels a bite on the upper part of his left arm. Did it just bite me? I don’t feel any pain. The monster swims away and Zarden decides to continue swimming back to the beach. I have to be about a football field away from Mom now. I can see where she is sitting. I don’t have far to go.As soon as he moves his arm to start swimming, he feels a pain so intense that he sees black spots.
“AHHHHH my arm. I can’t move my arm!” he screams.
His scream captures the attention of the alien-guard on duty. As the alien-guard is swimming to rescue him, all Zarden can think about is the searing pain in his left arm. It feels like a burning sensation. He could feel himself getting ready to pass out. As he is going in and out of consciousness, he can feel two arms grab him and pull him out of the water. Then there was nothing.
Feeling groggy, as if a bus had just hit him, Zarden awakens. The room smells sterile, like hand-sanitizer, the lights are blinding, and the bed is rock hard. He opens his eyes and realizes he is not in his bed, but in a hospital bed. He looks to his left and sees both of his parents sitting in chairs.
“Mom? Dad?” Zarden asks.
“Oh, Zarden you’re awake! Oh, my sweet boy” his mom says as she wraps his arms around him.
Zarden attempts to hug her back. He wraps one arm around her and becomes confused when his left arm doesn’t follow. His mom backs away and sits back down in her seat. Zarden looks to the right side of his body and shakes his right arm. Ok this one works, why is my left arm having a hard time?He looks to his left side and nothing is there. He feels around for his left arm and there is nothing but air and hospital bed sheets. He continues to feel upward finally hitting something. He looks and only sees that there is arm until his halfway above his elbow.
“What the heck. Where is my arm. Mom! Where is my arm?” Zarden asks before he begins to cry.
